Tom Adair wins a three way playoff to take the win in Tyler

The Texas Putting Tour took its normal early May swing through East Texas playing in Tyler on May 6th.  A heavy rain fell in the early morning and with overcast sky’s the rest of the day the course would remain wet throughout the event.

Lee Messinger would hold the lead after the opening round at 10 under 26. Local Tom Adair was sitting in second one stroke back with Jeffrey Smith, James Taylor and Mike Baldoza tied for third three in back of Messinger. Jeffrey Smith and Steve Tanton would both charge in the second round both shooting 10 under 26. Going into the last round Messinger and Smith would be tied for the lead with Adair and Tanton sitting one stroke back.

Messinger would start the last round strong making six of the first eight holes but he was unable to maintain the pace and both Adair and Tanton were able to pull Lee back going into the final few holes. A poor front nine from Smith left him too far back to make up ground on the tough back nine. None of the contenders were able to close strong and when the last putt had fallen there was three way tie for first at 24 under 84 between Messinger, Adair, and Tanton.

None of the players started off strong in the playoff but Adair would hold a slight lead after the front nine. As the back nine progressed Tanton fell off the pace while Adair maintained a one stroke lead from the 9th hole to the 15th over Messinger. Both would make the 16th but Adair would secure the win when he made the 17th and Messinger missed. The win was his first of year and also earned him a state spot. Additional spots went to Steve Armstrong and Gary Reed in match play. The available World Spot went to Danny Tatum.

 Locals Dominate Field in Tyler

Tyler, TX has three great local APA players, and as the Texas Tour traveled back to Tyler on Saturday to continue their 2006 season, all three would come to the top of the field, dominating the tournament's final rounds to sweep the top three spots.  At the end of regulation play, Dave Blalock and Gary Plain found themselves tied at 84, where Blalock would fire off a great round at 9 under par to take his first win of the 2006 season.

Due to heavy rains the night before, the tournament on Tyler's Course #1 got underway on wet carpets, resulting in higher scores for the opening round.  At the end of the first round Trevor Lewin, David Chisum and Rhett Wylie were leading at 7 under par, with Mike Huckaby, Dave Blalock, and Jack Ramsey one stroke back at 30.

With the sun coming out and the carpets drying, the second round saw three locals begin to separate from the field.  Wylie posted a second round 10 under par to take over the lead at 55, and a round at 11 under par for Plain had him three strokes behind the leader at 58.  Blalock and Lewin were still close at 59.

In the final round, the locals again put on a great performance.  Blalock fired a solid round at 11 under par to finish at 84.  Plain aced 10 of his first 12 holes to shoot 10 under par in the final round and tie Blalock at 84 for the win.  Wylie faded a little, posting a final round 5 under par but was able to hold on to the third slot at 86.

Lewin finished fourth at 87, and David Chisum finished fifth at 89 for the final expense reimbursement slot.

In the 18 hole playoff that followed the match, Blalock fired a solid round at 9 under par to take a four stroke victory over Plain.  The win was Blalock's first of the 2006 season.
